Video Forensics Analysis

Video Forensics is a branch of Digital Forensics that deals with the analysis, authentication and enhancement of video recordings for investigative and legal purposes. The main objective is to verify the integrity of a video, improve its quality to extract useful information and identify any manipulations.

Phases of Forensic Analysis Video

1. Acquisition and Preservation

  • Collect the original video file without any alterations.

  • Create a hash (MD5, SHA-256) to ensure its integrity.

  • Get metadata information (date, time, recording device).

2. Video Authentication

  • Metadata analysis to check for inconsistencies.

  • Check file structure for changes or recoding.

  • Frame-by-frame analysis to detect possible manipulations.

  • Detection of inconsistent compression artifacts (indicative of editing).

3. Improve Video Quality

  • Noise reduction and sharpness improvement.

  • Increasing resolution with AI super-resolution techniques.

  • Brightness and contrast correction to highlight hidden details.

  • Video stabilization to eliminate shaking.

4. Content Analysis

  • Facial recognition to identify known subjects.

  • Analysis of objects and vehicles using computer vision.

  • Reconstruction of the time sequence of events.

  • Identifying suspicious movements or relevant actions.

Applications of Video Forensics

  • Authentication – Determine whether a video has been modified or altered.

  • Image Enhancement – Remove noise, improve sharpness and lighting conditions.

  • Content Analysis – Identifying relevant subjects, objects, movements, or events.

  • Deepfake Detection – Detecting fake videos using artificial intelligence.

  • Forensic Investigations – Analysis of CCTV, dashcam, bodycam, drone and smartphone recordings.

Tools Used in Video Forensics

  • Amped FIVE – Forensic Video Analysis, Enhancement and Authentication.

  • VideoCleaner – Open-source software for enhancement and authentication.

  • DVR Examiner – Video recovery and analysis from CCTV and DVR systems.

  • FFmpeg + Hex Editor – Metadata analysis and video file structure.

  • Microsoft Video Authenticator – Deepfake Detection.
